1380188_650257951662270_1949309649_nLinea was honored to be invited to the Inaugural Kennedy Forum in Boston in October. There she was able to hear such exceptional speakers as Representative Patrick Kennedy, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary Kathleen Sibelius and Chelsea Clinton. The importance of community healthcare was discussed as well as policy, workplace support, community engagement, stigma and much more. Linea was overjoyed to see all of her friends in the mental health community represented as she got to reconnect with friends from DBSA, NAMI, the wonderful Janine Francolini from the Flawless Foundation, the gracious Brandon Staglin of IMHRO and our good friend Delaney Ruston of MyDoc productions. Many exciting personal pursuits also came out of the visit for Linea as she came home and quickly applied to Brown University’s Executive Master of Healthcare Leadership program and the AAPD Hearne Leadership Award, as well as quickly calling her agent about a second book. Linea decided to apply for everything to see what she gets. Results to come!

swedenCinda led a class of graduate students to Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden in August. Uppsala University is the oldest university in Scandinavia. The course was a study of comparative education and social policy. Cinda met with scholars, policy makers, human service workers and citizens, learning more about the differences in health care and education in Sweden and the US. She and her students learned about health care, higher education, social supports for those in need and current issues of concern to the citizens in Sweden. Cinda plans to return in 2015 to teach this course again. Sweden is a wonderful country and this was a fantastic experience!

Category: Travel June 15, 2013

Linea and Cinda h1240659_631746606846738_13868650_nad the wonderful privilege to visit Atlanta’s Skyland Trail and to speak at their annual Dorothy C. Fuqua Lecture Series with amazing panelist such as CDC’s Dr. Alex Crosby and Emory University’s Dr. Ray Kotwicki, moderated by CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta. We were lucky enough to hear Dr. Alex Crosby speak about the CDC’s efforts towards suicide prevention, Dr. Kotwicki’s comments on the brain as part of the body, and Dr. Gupta’s comments on the media’s role in stigma and future hopes for stigma reduction. Linea was especially pleased, as she was able to sit in on Dr. Kotwicki’s psychiatry class at the Emory Medical School. She can’t seem to decide whether she wants to be a doctor or a lawyer because it is all so interesting!

Community Mental Health in India

Category: Travel April 28, 2013

IMG_0195In April Linea traveled to India to work with filmmaker and Dr. Delaney Ruston as she created films about community mental health workers for her Fulbright Scholar Fellowship. Linea had the wonderful opportunity to travel to the state of Kerala where she worked with the organization Mhat, an organization dedicated to educating community mental health workers and to dispersing them within their communities. Linea was amazed as the stigma decreased in communities due to peer involvement and community support. Linea was disappointed to head back the day they were going to the mountains filled with wild elephants, but feels the experience was life changing for both her work in advocacy and her life in general. Linea has a goal to one day go back as a Fulbright Scholar herself. Thanks Delaney! (Check out Delaney’s work here:
